Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Justice

Michael Schöll

Michael Schöll has been Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) since 2021, bringing extensive expertise in law and public administration to this position. An attorney at law with an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and a doctorate from the University of Basel, Mr Schöll has had a distinguished legal career in both private practice and public service.

Prior to his appointment as Director, Mr Schöll worked as an attorney at a business law firm in Zurich. He joined the FOJ in 2009 as Head of the Private International Law Unit and was later appointed Head of the Private Law Division in 2015. In both positions, he oversaw law reform proposals, in particular in the area of private international law.

One of the FOJ’s tasks is to ensure that Swiss law continues to meet the needs of both domestic and international commercial users. Among other initiatives, the FOJ has proposed legislation that will allow Swiss Cantons to authorize the use of English as the language of proceedings before commercial courts in Switzerland as of January 1, 2025.
